Rivers Assembly de-recognises Celestine Omehia as former Gov, orders refund of entitlements


The House of Assembly in Rivers State, has announced the de-recognised Celestine Omehia as a former Governor of the state.

The lawmakers reached and passed the motion during a sitting on Thursday.

By the motion, Omehia is given seven days to refund all monetary entitlement he received as a governor as benefits which is stated to amount about N600 million.

Omehia is also expected to return about N96.5 million he received as pension.

Omehia would by the motion, also cease to be addressed as His Excellency.

Omehia was removed by the Supreme Court in 2007, six months after he was declared winner of the state governorship election.

The court ordered that former Governor Rotimi Amaechi be sworn in as Governor.

Gov. Nyesom Wike upon his assumption as governor in 2015, recognised Omehia as a former governor of the state.

Omehia had recently fallen out with Gov. Wike following his support for the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar.
