Trouble as Uzodinma goes after Okorocha’s 305 millionaires, demands refund

The Imo State Microfinance Bank has dispatched letters to the 305 Millionaires whom the Owelle Rochas Okorocha administration gave a lifeline of One Million Naira each to either kickstart their businesses or improve their already existing businesses.

In a letter signed on behalf of the banks by two signatories simply identified as authorized signatories, the bank demanded that the beneficiaries begin immediate refund of the money. The letter gave beneficiaries until 30th of July to make full refunds or risk legal action, including foreclosure process on any asset which may have served as collateral for the loan.

The Owelle Rochas Okorocha administration had given loans to 305 youths selected from across the 305 political wards in the State. However, the loan repayment was said to have been underwritten by the State Government through an agreement reached with the Central Bank of Nigeria. It is not immediately known why the Imo State Government under Senator Hope Uzodimma has decided to demand a refund of this fund now. Some commentators are of the opinion that the governor is doing this to get back at Okorocha, whom it is believed the administration is jittery of his massive popularity among the masses.

According to Comrade Chima, a youth leader in Imo State, the government is worried that all arsenals primed against the former Imo State governor have failed to weaken him.

“I think this is a blackmail aimed at the former governor. The present government may be aiming to send the wrong signals against the former governor, by punishing those they feel are his foot soldiers, but the evidence shows that there were no political considerations in selecting the beneficiaries of the fund. The Uzodimma government would simply be punishing these youths, unnecessarily, if it goes ahead to insist on this refund.”

“These Millionaires are neither Owelle’s relatives nor his political associates, but innocent Imo youths, whose lives were affected by a compassionate administration that thought of the best way to empower its teeming youths, thereby creating both wealth and jobs in the State. Governor Uzodimma should leave innocent youths out of whatever political troubles he is having with Okorocha.” He lamented.
